The tribes of the Prophet's people ﷺ

Quraysh, the tribe of the Prophet ﷺ, was a family of clans descended from Fihr; most lived in the valley of Mecca around the Kaʿba and shared in its care, a few (Quraysh al-Ẓawāhir) on its outskirts. In Medina the Helpers were the two tribes of the Aws and the Khazraj, cousins who had fought each other for generations until Islam united them. Open a clan to see who belonged to it.

83 tribes and clans, 325 people placed in them.

About this page

Clans

An Arab tribe was a tree of families, each named after a common forefather (Banū Hāshim, the children of Hāshim). The clan a person belonged to decided his allies, his protectors and his place in Mecca or Medina. Allies (ḥalīf) and freedmen (mawlā) were counted with the clan they joined.

Membership

The names under a clan are the people on this site who descend from it in the male line: the family tree, the Companions and the people of Badr. Allies and freedmen are not listed here; their own entries name the clan they joined. The clan tree itself follows Ibn Ḥazm's Jamharat Ansāb al-ʿArab and Ibn Hishām.

Sources

Ibn Ḥazm, Ibn Hishām, Ibn Saʿd and al-Samʿānī's al-Ansāb. Each clan lists its own sources.
